Volunteers FAQs

FAQs

What is the first step?

First become a member of Universal Chastity Education. You can join on-line using our secure server. If you prefer, you can print out the membership application and mail or fax it to us. Members receive an e-newsletter which includes updates on programs and activities. Membership provides the financial support needed to sustain the organization. To begin the placement process, potential volunteers should complete the Volunteer Application Form and return it to UCE. Completion of this form in no way commits you to volunteering, but it is the essential first step. You may complete this form on-line.

Who volunteers with UCE?

A UCE volunteer is committed to the primary vision of a healthy, AIDS-free world. The UCE volunteer sees the simplicity and hope in the example Uganda has set for us that sexual behavior can be changed. The UCE volunteer believes that chastity is possible, that our faith in God inspires this and that the simple message of living a life of abstinence until faithful marriage will prevent HIV/AIDS/STDs and save lives. UCE volunteers work in whatever way is best suited to their qualifications.

Where are UCE programs?

UCE has projects in Africa (Uganda and Burundi) and the main headquarters is located in Pueblo, CO, USA.

What religion is UCE ?

UCE is a faith-based, non-governmental, non-profit organization that has endorsements from clergy of the Church of Uganda (Anglican), the Roman Catholic Church in Uganda and the Episcopal Church of Burundi. UCE inspires youth that God’s plan of seeking chastity and faithful marriage brings freedom and health, physically and spiritually. Please read the Uganda UCE Charter.

What do UCE volunteers do?

Examples of what an UCE volunteer might do include: training local outreach leaders by updating their knowledge in STDs/HIV/AIDS , assisting in curriculum development, motivating the students by sharing personal testimony, assisting in the development and implementation of simple monitoring and evaluation tools to assess UCE success and improve UCE effectiveness. Volunteers with technical, administrative, accounting, development, and computer skills are needed by UCE both at home and abroad. Physicians, nurses and educators who are committed to the ideals held by UCE and who are knowledgeable about the health risks of sex outside of marriage are sought to join us on outreaches and in educational materials development.

UCE is an educational faith based organization which welcomes qualified volunteers, gratefully receives donations, depends on prayer and trusts in God. Expect to be inspired by the simplicity of the Ugandan success and motivated to do what you can to help Uganda maintain their success, survive HIV/AIDS and seek to help other countries do the same!

How long do volunteers serve?

Three weeks is the minimum service time. There are opportunities for longer placements if a volunteer has the time available

Can family members come?

Spouses and adolescent children may accompany volunteers on their assignments. For example, family members may be able to volunteer in some way appropriate for their skills and gifts to help in UCE development locally. On outreaches, married couples may mentor the team and students, while teens committed to abstinence may give their testimony.

Are summer or short term student internships available?

Yes, UCE welcomes applications from college students (minimum age: 21 years). This is an unpaid internship offering experience to the student interested in a career in an international setting, preventative health strategy, theology, education and non-profit organization development.

Volunteers and student interns are encouraged to raise financial support for their service with UCE from their church or youth group. Doing so allows others who are unable to travel to be a part of this ministry and support this cause. Since UCE is a non-profit organization, the volunteer intern may raise funds via donations to UCE that can then be directly allocated towards the volunteer’s expenses.

Is a foreign language required?

English is spoken in Uganda and French is necessary for service in Burundi.

Who coordinates the volunteering?

A volunteer will be assigned a coordinator who is a member of the UCE Board of Directors and who has expertise in the same or related field and/or field experience in that country. The coordinator will screen and orient the volunteer and provide information about available sites for service, local customs, housing arrangements, health conditions and assist in logistical arrangements. Prior volunteers are invaluable assistants in this orientation.

What about expenses?

Volunteers pay for transportation to and from the program site and for their room and board, although the local UCE contingency will assist in locating appropriate housing. Since UCE is registered as a nonprofit with the US Internal Revenue Service, most travel and living expenses and related costs incurred by a volunteer are a tax-deductible donation. Volunteers keep track of their expenses and, upon returning home, submit a Financial Contribution Form to UCE noting these expenses. UCE sends a letter of acknowledgement which, along with relevant receipts, can be used for income tax purposes. Volunteers and student interns are encouraged to seek local financial support of their service with UCE from their church or youth group. Doing so allows others who are unable to travel to be a part of this ministry and support this cause.

What about insurance?

UCE medical volunteers function in their capacity as teachers and not in patient care. Volunteers are required to submit documentation about their education, licensure and certification status to UCE and further advised to travel with copies of the same. Regarding travel or health or medical evacuation insurance, UCE recommends consulting your insurance company regarding coverage provided by your policy while abroad. UCE can provide names of companies which provide travel and evacuation insurance. UCE strongly recommends that all volunteers procure medical evacuation insurance.
